I was born in a small village thirty miles south
of the California/Mexico border. I came to the
United States when I was five to receive medical
attention needed due to contracting polio when I
was two years old. I had always intended to go
back to Mexico, but by the time the medical
attention was over, I had been in school several
years so I decided to stay and finish my
schooling.
I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts from St.
Mary's College in Moraga, California, then went
on to receive my Masters of Fine Arts in drawing
with distinction at California College of Arts and
Crafts in Oakland.
Though I was raised in both Mexican and
American cultures, most of my paintings reflect
my Mexican Native heritage. Through bold
color, dramatic lighting, hand made objects such
as pottery, baskets, blankets, musical
instruments as well as flowers and other cultural
objects, I create paintings that speak of the heart
of my people and the culture that many are
trying to preserve. I try to evoke a sense of
ancient history and tradition as well as weave
symbols of stories passed down orally from
generation to generation.
